01 Intended use

Home or Business: How Much Oven Do You Really Need?

The first fork in the road is simple: will this oven cook for your family, or for your customers? Everything downstream — size, fuel, even where it can be installed — follows from that answer.

Home

Pizza Ovens for Home Use

If you're cooking for friends and family, you don't need one of our commercial models. Serving just a couple of people? A countertop Nino, mini Roma, or mini Fiamma Rossa will suit you well. Feeding a bigger table — or cooking full meals with a few cast-iron skillets going at once — step up to a media or grande Roma, an Elite, a full-size Fiamma Rossa, or a Milano.

Business

Pizza Ovens for Restaurants & Commercial Kitchens

If your oven needs to keep up with paying customers, size it around demand, not decor. Our Commercial Pizza Oven series can cook 5 to 8 pizzas at once depending on the model, so a dinner rush doesn't turn into a ticket backlog. Running events, tailgates, or a mobile menu? Our concession trailer models bring commercial output on the road.

02 Style

Modern or Traditional: Choosing a Look That Fits Your Space

A pizza oven is a permanent fixture in your kitchen, patio, or dining room — it's worth choosing a style that blends with, or intentionally stands out from, what's already there.

Modern

Sleek, Stainless-Steel Design

If you prefer a modern look, choose from our sleek stainless steel models, including the Largo, Fiamma Rossa, and Professional series. For an extra modern touch, Fiamma Rossa ovens feature an octagonal dome. The Roma, Elite, and Grande series are also available with a powder-coated black top for a different modern finish.

Traditional

Brick & Pompeii-Style Design

Want a more classic look? Our Napolicento line is a series of brick-and-tile ovens with a Pompeii-style dome, built in the same tradition as the ovens of Naples — the birthplace of Neapolitan pizza. The Milano series offers a similar Pompeii-style dome in castable clay for a slightly different traditional finish.

03 Fuel type

Wood-Fired, Gas, or Hybrid: Which Fuel Type Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we hear is "which fuel type is best?" The honest answer depends on whether you value authenticity, convenience, or both.

Wood-Fired

Authentic, Ritual, Flavor-Forward

Wood-burning pizza ovens offer an unparalleled, authentic experience. The crackling sound, the smell of burning wood, and the traditional ambiance are unmatched — perfect if you enjoy the ritual of building a fire as much as the pizza itself.

Gas

Instant Heat, Minimal Upkeep

Gas pizza ovens are known for ease of use — instant heat and flame with a flip of a switch or push of a button. They require minimal maintenance, making them a practical choice for busy households and busy kitchens alike.

Hybrid

Multi-Fuel, Best of Both

A hybrid oven combines the benefits of wood and gas — burn wood when you want the authentic experience, and switch to gas for convenience. ilFornino's multi-fuel ovens let you skip the compromise entirely.

04 Setting

Indoor or Outdoor: Where Will Your Pizza Oven Live?

ilFornino ovens are built for a range of settings. With the right accessories, they work outdoors, indoors, in humid climates, and even on the move.

Outdoor

Outdoor Kitchens, Patios & Events

If you have an existing outdoor kitchen or barbecue island, your oven can sit right on top of it. If not, every ilFornino model can be paired with a stand. Live in a humid climate or near salt water? Ask about our ilFoShield™ protective coating to guard against rust and weathering. Bringing your oven to tailgates, weddings, or events? Our concession trailer models make it effortless.

Indoor

Indoor Kitchens & Dining Rooms

Looking for an oven you can install right inside your home or business? Several models — including our Roma, Elite, Grande, Milano, and Commercial series — can be placed indoors with a double-wall chimney and an exhaust fan for proper ventilation.

05 Sizing

How to Size Your Pizza Oven

The best oven balances the size of the cooking chamber with the space you actually have. A bigger oven isn't always the better choice — larger ovens take longer to heat and use more fuel to maintain temperature. Weigh three things:

  1. 1 The intended use of the oven — casual weeknights, weekend entertaining, or full commercial service.
  2. 2 The number of people you typically cook for, at a normal gathering and at your biggest one.
  3. 3 The available space in your garden, terrace, balcony, or kitchen line.
1–2 people

A countertop oven is plenty of room. Great for weeknight pizza for two without heating more oven than you need.

3–4 people

Step up to a mid-size chamber that can hold two or three pizzas in rotation, or a full meal alongside them.

5+ people

Go full-size for larger gatherings, multiple courses, or several cast-iron pans working at once.

Want the full sizing breakdown?

Both guides include detailed chamber dimensions, fuel consumption, and model-by-model recommendations.

Common questions

Pizza Oven Buying FAQs

What size pizza oven do I need for home use?

For 1–2 people, a countertop oven like the Nino, Roma Mini, or Fiamma Rossa Mini is plenty. For 3–4 people, step up to a Roma Media or Milano. For 5 or more, or for cooking full meals alongside your pizzas, a Grande, Elite, or full-size Fiamma Rossa gives you more room to work.

What is the difference between a wood-fired and a gas pizza oven?

Wood-fired ovens burn real wood for authentic flavor, aroma, and a hands-on cooking ritual, but take more attention to manage. Gas ovens light instantly with a switch or button and need minimal maintenance, trading some ritual for convenience. Hybrid ovens let you use both.

Can a pizza oven be used indoors?

Yes. Several ilFornino series, including Roma, Elite, Grande, Milano, and our commercial line, can be installed indoors with a double-wall chimney and an exhaust fan to properly vent heat and smoke.

Do I need a UL or NSF certified pizza oven?

If you're installing in a commercial kitchen, restaurant, or foodservice business, most local health and fire codes require a UL and/or NSF certified unit. Home installations generally don't require certification, but it's worth checking your local code first.

How many pizzas can a commercial pizza oven cook at once?

Depending on the model, ilFornino's commercial ovens can cook 5 to 8 pizzas at the same time — enough to keep up with a steady dinner rush without a ticket backlog.

Should I choose wood-fired, gas, or hybrid for a restaurant?

It depends what you're optimizing for. Wood-fired delivers the most authentic flavor and a visible, theatrical cooking experience. Gas fires up faster and runs more consistently through a long service. Hybrid lets you offer wood-fired pizza during peak hours and switch to gas the rest of the time.

So you know you're interested in buying a pizza oven, but which one is right for you? We hear this question all the time, and for good reason—with a wide array of options available, it's an exciting journey to find the perfect one. To guide you through this process, we've created a comprehensive pizza oven buyer's guide.
Below, we discuss some of the most important factors to consider, the questions you need to ask yourself, and how to tailor your choice to best suit your unique needs.

Personal vs. Professional Use

First, Will you use your pizza oven at home or in your business? You may need a different size or product line depending on your answer

Home

If you plan on using your pizza oven at home for friends and family, you won't need one of our larger commercial models. For those serving just a couple of people, our Largo may suit you, or a mini Roma or Mini Fiamma Rosa. If you're going to be serving more people than that — or if you plan on making full meals that require multiple cast-iron skillets in the oven at once — you'll likely need something a little bigger, such as a media or grande Roma, Elite ,  Fiamma Rosa , or Milano model.

Businesses

If you plan on using your pizza oven in a business setting, you'll want to ensure it's big enough to keep up with customer demand. Our Commercial Pizza Oven series can cook 5 to 8 pizzas at once, depending on the model, so you won't have to worry about keeping your customers waiting.

Look

The pizza oven buyer's guide would only be complete by mentioning the importance of aesthetics. Whether you prefer a modern or traditional look, you're sure to find an oven from our collection that suits your style.

Modern

When buying a pizza oven, you'll want to make sure it blends in seamlessly with its setting — so finding a style that suits your existing decor is essential. If you prefer a more modern look, you can choose from one of the many sleek, stainless steel models we carry, like the Largo , Fiamma Rosa, and Professional. For an extra modern touch, Fiamma Rosa ovens have an octagonal dome.
Other models—Roma, Elite, and Grande—can have a powder—coated black top.

Traditional

Would you prefer a more classic look? You can't get any more authentic than our Napolicento line, a series of brick-and-tile ovens with a Pompeii-style dome based on the same ovens found in Naples, Italy—the birthplace of the Neapolitan pizza. Another great option is the Milano series , whose traditional Pompeii-style dome is castable clay.

Fuel Type: Wood, Gas or Hybrid?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "Which fuel type is best?" But the answer depends on whether you value authenticity, convenience, or both.

Wood

Wood-burning pizza ovens offer an unparalleled, authentic experience. The crackling sound, the smell of burning wood, and the traditional ambiance they create are unmatched. This option is perfect for those who enjoy the ritual of building a fire and the aesthetic charm it provides.

Gas

Gas pizza ovens, known for their ease of use, offer instant heat and flames with a flip of a switch or a push of a button. They require minimal maintenance, making them a practical choice for those with busy lifestyles.

Hybrid (Multi-Fuel)

A hybrid pizza oven offers the best of both worlds, combining the benefits of both wood and gas. It provides the flexibility to burn wood when you want the authentic experience and switch to gas for convenience. ilFornino offers a multi-fuel oven in both wood and gas for those who don't want to compromise on either authenticity or ease of use.

Wood Fired Pizza ovens

ilFornino Wood Fired Pizza Oven

Setting

Our pizza ovens are well-suited for a variety of settings. With the right accessories, they can even be used indoors, in humid areas, and on the move.

Outdoors

Are you planning on putting your pizza oven outdoors? If you've got an existing outdoor kitchen or barbecue island, you can place the oven right on top of it. If you don't, you'll likely want to purchase a stand (don't worry — all of our models can be paired with stands). Live in a humid area or near a body of water? Add our ilFoShield™ protective coating to buffer against rusting and weathering. And if you plan to bring your pizza oven to tailgates, weddings, or other events, our concession trailer models make it a breeze.

Indoors

Are you looking for an oven you can put right inside your home or business? Several models—like our Roma, Elite, Grande, Milano, and Commercial series—can be placed indoors with a double-wall chimney and an exhaust fan.

Find the Right Pizza Oven for You

Still trying to decide which pizza oven is right for you. The best models balance the size of the cooking chamber with the available space in your garden, terrace, or balcony.
Opting for the giant oven is only sometimes the best choice, as more giant ovens require more time and fuel to reach and maintain the desired temperature. To choose the right oven size, consider these factors:

  1. The intended use of the oven
  2. The number of people you typically cook for
  3. The available space for the oven
